The five pillars of AI readiness

1. Data readiness

This is where most companies stumble. AI systems need data that is structured, clean, accessible, and sufficient in volume. The audit examines:

  • Where your data lives (spreadsheets, ERP, CRM, paper files, email threads)
  • Whether it is structured or unstructured
  • How much historical data exists (months, years, decades)
  • Whether data is labelled and categorised consistently
  • How accessible it is via APIs or database connections

Common finding: Data exists, but it is scattered across five systems with no single source of truth. This alone can add two to three months to any AI project.

2. Process readiness

AI automates processes. But the process must first be documented, stable, and repeatable. If your team handles the same task differently every time, or if the process changes quarterly, AI will struggle to learn a pattern that does not exist.

The audit maps the workflows you want to automate and evaluates their maturity. Are they written down? Do they have clear inputs and outputs? Are there edge cases that require human judgement?

Common finding: Companies often want to automate their most chaotic process. The better strategy is to start with the most stable one — the one that is boring, repetitive, and rule-based. That is where process automation delivers the fastest return.

3. Team readiness

Someone in your organisation needs to own the AI initiative. The audit assesses whether your team understands what AI can and cannot do, whether there is a realistic champion for the project, and whether the broader team is open to change or likely to resist it.

This is not about having data scientists on staff. It is about having someone who can articulate the business problem, make decisions about trade-offs, and provide feedback during development.

Common finding: Executive enthusiasm is high, but mid-level operational staff — the people who actually do the work — have not been consulted. This creates friction during implementation.

4. Infrastructure readiness

Can your current technology stack support AI workloads? The audit evaluates your cloud infrastructure, API landscape, security posture, and compute capacity. If you are running critical operations on a local server from 2015 with no API access, AI integration becomes significantly harder and more expensive.

The audit forces clarity: what is the specific goal, how will you measure success, and what is the expected ROI? If the answer to any of these is unclear, the recommendation is to define the business case before starting development.
